SLOPE: Donald Silverstein and Karen Green Recor
May 26 - July 23, 2010
Gallery Sakiko New York is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Donald Silverstein and Karen Green Recor. Working with the language of abstraction, both artists' works employ color and form as main expressive devices. Entitled "Slope," the exhibtion focuses on the energetic movement and keen sense of direction, which can be found in both Silverstein's and Recor's work.
For over five decades, Donald Silverstein [1932-2004] explored the divide between figuration and abstraction in painting. Abstract Expressionism, Surrealist details, Post-modern illustrations and Sci-Fi had a significant impact on his work. He repeatedly fused expressive color fields with fragments of referential objects, favoring fluid, biomorphic forms. Urban landscapes and Japanese culture were an important source for inspiration, yet his interest in the creation of emotive themes remained abstract.
However freely associative, Recor's paintings are intimate in that her creative process remains highly personal. In the tradition of 20th Century abstract painting, she believes in the immediacy of gesture, as well as in the establishment of atmospheric spaces that are seemingly boundless. Though her hand shows spontaneity of impulse, her compositions are well-balanced and harmonious. Her subjects are largely derived from memories and it is Recor's ambition to create compositions that will evoke memories for the viewer as well, be it of a time, place or idea that lingers in the subconscious."
Karen Recor received her M.F.A. from the University of Hartford, CT. She has exhibited extensively in the United States and in Europe, including Barcelona and Dublin. Her work is part of many private, as well as corporate collections and commissioned works, include projects for Bank Five, MA; Connecticut National Bank, CT; Phoenix Life Insurance, NY; and McKinsey and Company, NJ. She lives and works in Connecticut.
