John Derrick (Melbourne, Australia) is currently a PHD candidate in the School of Creative Media, RMIT University. He is exploring the integration of 2D figurative oil painting in a 3D virtual reality space. He was awarded a Samstag Scholarship in 1998 and spent two years in New York. His time in New York  involved doing a masters of fine arts at Pratt Institute, studying painting and 3D modelling and animation. He has been an independent curator, organising X – Semination exhibition at Kings Artist Run Initiative in 2005 showcasing emerging New York artists. The exhibition highlighted the use of old and new technologies in art-making. Currently visual arts curator of Digital Gothic exhibition exploring Melbourne’s Gothic aesthetic to real and virtual gallery environments in New York City. The exhibition will travel to Gallery Sakiko and Pratt Institute in August 2008, New York, and then to Mars Gallery in Port Melbourne, Australia, in September 2009. He has studied a bachelor of fine arts at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University. He has had solo shows at fortyfivedownstairs, Flinders Lane, Melbourne, and Pratt Institute, New York.
